Repetition occupies time. It occupies patience. It asks how long something must be repeated before it becomes something else. Repetition becomes meaningful because it repeats through time and refuses to disappear completely. We used to wait for a goodbye to mean something. Now the virtual world has made hello effortless and goodbye shameful—a repetition Sturtevant never knew.

A short hello, a long hello.

A short goodbye, a long goodbye.

And vice versa.
